A splash of colour for you on this rainy day.
I love finding smartie lids, I love it that they are no longer on the beach, breaking into bits that could be consumed by our precious wildlife. I love finding something with a story behind it...I am a treasure hunter. These little lids are only part of my collection!!! I've lost count of how many I have found or have stuck on one of my colour wheels, personalizing it with its new owners initial.
They stopped being used in 2005 and the hexatube was introduced. This elminated the plastic lid which was great but back then I feel it was more of a shelf-stacking issue rather than nestle going plastic-free!!!
Over the years the lids went through many changes, the 'Smarties' ones are from 1990-2005 but the 'Rowntrees ' ones are much older, some dating back to the 1960s. Earlier than that they were imperial sized and were enormous compared to the modern ones, measuring almost an inch across! (I was gifted one of these💜)
Capitol letters from the 1970s and numbers too. Special editions included football ones with words on them such as ' booked ' and 'goal' and smartian lids that had a little alien on the back. Dinosaur special editions were a lovely dark green.
If you want to find out more just Google smartie lids and click on a website called 'classaxe' It's brilliant. Also there is a site called the 'northern trumpeter'.
There are European ones on our beaches that have floated over from Europe, these have a slightly hexagonal look to the edges. There are imposters with flat tabs instead of the usual rounded tabs, some have no letter. There are copies called 'Kent' and 'Clarnico'. Anyone got one of these?
Keep looking...keep using the hashtag #smartielidsonthebeach
